Dear Friend,
Years ago, I read a passage by Edwidge Danticat entitled “Nou la, nou led.” In it, she speaks of Anacaona, a Taíno queen who ruled over the western part of Haiti. Despite her power, beauty, and many talents, Anacaona was captured and killed by the Spaniards who invaded her land in search of gold. In this same passage, Danticat reflects on how the spirit of Anacaona lives on in us, her daughters—those of us who have triumphed in the face of adversity. In the midst of our trials, we remain steadfast and persevere, recognizing the privilege it is to simply be alive.

This concept of the legacy of Anacaona resonated with me and has stayed with me throughout the years. I see myself in Anacaona. I see my beloved Mother and my aunts in Anacaona. I realize that I have crossed paths with many powerful, beautiful, and talented women, much like Anacaona, in whom I identify that same spirit of resilience yet bold defiance in the face of adversity. It is for us that I have created this foundation, to create a space where we can connect and support one another, and we can inspire each other to be great.

Sincerely,
Patricia Nabal
